Shaarei Chesed Jerusalem – The Neighborhood
About Shaarei Chessed Jerusalem
The Sha’arei Chesed neighborhood was originally built in 1909 to provide low cost housing for Charedi Askanazi Jews. It was championed by Rabbi Shmuel Salant who even laid the first cornerstone. As such, the infrastructure of the area was made to conform to Charedi standards of life. This includes a communal oven for baking Shabbos food and specialized window placements to ensure each family’s privacy. Today, the community is still mainly Charedi, although moderately so. It is a favorite place for wealthy Americans and Anglo-Europeans.
The buildings in the area were originally built in blocks with large spaces between them. With time people planted fruit trees and other greenery which further added to the charm of the neighborhood. Over time, the residents began to renovate and add extra floors as well as modern facilities to the apartments. Today Shaarei Chesed is considered high-end Jerusalem real estate.
