The Sha’arei Chesed neighborhood was originally built in 1909 to provide low cost housing for Charedi Askanazi Jews. It was championed by Rabbi Shmuel Salant who even laid the first cornerstone. As such, the infrastructure of the area was made to conform to Charedi standards of life. This includes a communal oven for baking Shabbos food and specialized window placements to ensure each family’s privacy. Today, the community is still mainly Charedi, although moderately so. It is a favorite place for wealthy Americans and Anglo-Europeans.
The buildings in the area were originally built in blocks with large spaces between them. With time people planted fruit trees and other greenery which further added to the charm of the neighborhood. Over time, the residents began to renovate and add extra floors as well as modern facilities to the apartments. Today Shaarei Chesed is considered high-end Jerusalem real estate.

Sha’arei Chesed is a quiet area bordered by Nachlaot, Rechavia, Sacher Park, and Keren Kayemeth Leisrael street. It is within walking distance of many of the city’s attractions including the City Center of Jerusalem, Machane Yehuda Market, and the Knesset. Sacher Park is a popular spot for family outings and a hub of local and city activity. Every year the annual Jerusalem Marathon and many holiday activities are there. The nearby main road of Keren Kayemeth Leisrael provides easy access to transportation, shopping, and more.
The neighborhood also hosts a variety of businesses and office centers making it ideal for high end professionals and entrepreneurs.
Furthermore, the area is home to many convinces such as the Jerusalem Medical Center and the Rechavia Post Office. You can check out map of Shaarei Chesed to get an even better idea of the area and its surroundings.

The Area is also home to a number of notable synagogues. This includes the Gra synagogue in Shaarei Chesed, the Aguda-Magen synagogue, Khal Chasidim of Shaarei Chesed and the Beit Zevul synagogue. To top it off is the famed Great Synagogue near King George Street. This grand structure attracts tourists and regular worshippers alike to experience the beautiful architecture and exquisite cantorial singing every Shabbos.

Prices in the Shaarei Chesed vary but tend to remain quite high due to the upscale nature and prime location. Although most people live there year round there are many properties which are used as vacation or investment homes. These homes tend to be older structures but people are constantly renovating and updating.
When you look at a home in Shaarei Chesed Jerusalem it can begin at $9,000 per sqm. However if the property has extra amenities such as a sukkah balcony, an elevator, or a parking lot, it will begin at $11,000/sqm. As is customary, this price will continue to increases if the home is renovated or if it is in a new project. Those homes can range from $12,000 to $15,000 per sqm.
I understand that looking for a home can be daunting. Therefore Jerusalem Real Estate will give you all the help you need to find the best home in the best neighborhood for you.
